Concerns for Netflix series, "13 Reasons Why"

The trending Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, based on a young adult novel of the same name, is raising awareness and concerns of how we portray and deal with the real life issue of suicide, bullying, and sexual assault. The series revolves around 17-year-old Hannah Baker, who takes her own life and leaves behind audio recordings for 13 people who she says in some way were part of why she killed herself. Each tape recounts painful events in which one or more of the 13 individuals played a role.

We think it’s vital that parents are equipped with knowledge and resources when deciding whether or not their child should watch this series. If you choose to let your child, please take the time to consider either previewing this series before letting your child watch and/or watching it with your child. Here are some resources to help guide your decision making as you lead your family wisely.
