Superintendent Earley reflects on school year

It is impossible to think about the end of another school year without reflecting on the way it began.  As I walk through the Primary Building and observe the kindergarteners succeeding in their routines I remember the first day of school when they arrived a bit apprehensive yet excited about the new adventures awaiting them.   The staff has taken such care to enact plans that maximize every single day to the advantage of the students.  It is clear that their efforts were well worth the preparation.   As planned, our young learners have gained confidence, skills, and abilities that will help them successfully transition to first grade.  Their pride in their accomplishments can be observed in how often they engage me in conversations about how excited they are about the next adventures ahead of them.  It is a true joy to see the growth of our young people and witness the maturity and progress that teachers facilitate before our eyes.

Concerns for Netflix series, "13 Reasons Why"

Thirteen Reasons Why

The trending Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, based on a young adult novel of the same name, is raising awareness and concerns of how we portray and deal with the real life issue of suicide, bullying, and sexual assault. The series revolves around 17-year-old Hannah Baker, who takes her own life and leaves behind audio recordings for 13 people who she says in some way were part of why she killed herself. Each tape recounts painful events in which one or more of the 13 individuals played a role.

We think it’s vital that parents are equipped with knowledge and resources when deciding whether or not their child should watch this series.

Junior High art mural

                  disney art mural

Located next to the Art Room in the Junior High Building is a new  Disney mural completed by students of Mrs. Evans art classes.  Students are also currently working on a large one in the tunnel that the entire Art Club created.  The style was Abstract and students started the mural at the beginning of the year.  They are working hard to finish the collaborative piece by the end of the year.  Art Club also designed a mural above the tunnel that the entire school voted on.  The theme was,  "There is Always Room to Grow and Never Give Up."  The mural features rural images with inspirational quotes and phrases.( Happiness, equality, respect, opportunity, courage, honesty and freedom).  We just keep the projects coming and started two more  that focus on painting astronaut suits that Mrs. Weaver donated.  Students are turning them into pieces of artwork to hang in the school.

"GOOD" Awards presented to Sixth Graders

The assembly was attended by the entire sixth grade class as well as Parents and Family members.  The Germantown Lions are charter members in presenting these "GOOD" awards.  Ron Derry, a former teacher and coach from Northwest Ohio became blind due to complications of diabetes.  He still wanted to do positive things for students even though his teaching and coaching were no longer possible.  He had to decide, will I go on or will I be defeated by blindness.  The acronym GOOD stands for Going On Or Defeated.  The "GOOD" awards are given to students who exemplify good citizenship traits on a daily basis.  The Germantown Lions are proud to participate in this worthwhile project.

Third grade students honor Veterans

On November 11, third grade students from Mrs. Dickson's music classes presented a Veterans Day Program.  The theme of the program this year was "Spotlight on Veterans and Peace".  Mrs. Dickson's goal was for the students to present a program that was patriotic, fun, and moving to the point that students understood that not all heroes are million dollar athletes, famous singers, or cartoon characters - some wear dog tags.  Military Veterans as well as third grade families were invited to attend the program.  Thank you to all the men and women of the United States Military!

Drinking Fountains in the District tested

Valley View Schools Water Test Come Back Clean

In June 2016 the Ohio General Assembly passed legislation that created a grant program-Lead Plumbing Fixture Replacement Assistance Grant.  The intent of the grant is to reimburse schools for the testing of water samples, and the replacement of plumbing fixtures.

In September Valley View Local Schools applied and was approved for the grant.  At this time we also received notification that Halsey Taylor drinking fountains has lead lined tanks and these were the same models that are in the high school.  We at this time made the decision to shut off the fountains and bring in other water coolers for students until the test could be completed.

In October, Dayton Environmental conducted all lead water samples District wide.  The report showed we have one water fountain at the high school above legal limits and this water fountain will stay turned off and the bottled water coolers have been removed.

The decision we made were to protect the safety and well being of our students and staff.

Issue 60, an Important Decision for the future of our district

In the past several weeks, as well as up to election day, we will be providing information to assist you in making an informed decision regarding Issue 60. You will find issue 60 on your November 8 election ballot. This is the proposed bond issue for Valley View Local School District.

Build the Future

Valley View Local Schools MUST make major investments in our facilities in the next five years.  The State has a one-year offer to pay 53 percent of the cost of three new facilities, provided we pass our local share and address our facility needs district wide.

View the upcoming School District bond issue 60

On your November 8 election ballot you will find issue 60, the proposed bond issue for Valley View Local School District.  Please see below for wording of the actual bond issue 60.

60 PROPOSED BOND ISSUE VALLEY VIEW LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

A majority affirmative vote is necessary for passage.

60 Shall bonds be issued by the Valley View Local School District to pay the local share of school construction under the State of Ohio Classroom Facilities Assistance Program; furnishing and equipping the same; improving the sites thereof; and acquiring land and interests in land as necessary, in the principal amount of $27,455,000 to be repaid annually over a maximum period of 38 years, and an annual levy of property taxes to be made outside the ten-mill limitation, estimated by the county auditor to average over the repayment period of the bond issue 5.48 mills for each one dollar of tax valuation, which amounts to $0.548 for each one hundred dollars of tax valuation, commencing in 2016, first due in calendar year 2017, to pay the annual debt charges on the bonds, and to pay debt charges on any notes issued in anticipation of those bonds

Calculation of Taxes

Property in Ohio is appraised by the County Auditor.  Once the appraised value is determined, the taxable value can be calculated by multiplying the appraised value by 35%.

For  Example:

A property that is appraised at $100,000 will be taxed on 35% of $100,000.  Thirty-Five percent of $100,000 is $35,000 so the taxable value of a property valued at $100,000 is $35,000.

In Ohio 1 mill equals 1/1000 of a dollar or 0.001.  Valley View’s request is for 5.48 mills calculated for taxes as 5.48/1000=0.00548.

Using the same example a property appraised at $100,000, has a taxable value of $35,000 and will pay .00548 times $35,000 which is $191.80 per year, or $15.98 per month as a result of this tax request.

Appraised value may vary due to CAUV values and Homestead Exemption.  More detail on those may be found at the following link:

http://www.mcohio.org/government/elected_officials/auditor/homestead/index.php

*Drive to Victory is happening now*

Have you seen the Goodwill truck parked in the front parking lot at the High School and wondered why it is there? Its Drive to Victory time!  What is Drive to Victory, you ask?  It is an Interact Club event sponsored by Goodwill.  Participation is Oct. 17th through October 21st. The truck attendant will be there Wednesday and Thursday evening until 7pm.  The truck will be pulled away Friday at noon. There will also be a truck parked in the parking lot at Brookville.  VV is competing against Brookville to see who can collect the most in one week.  The collection is weighed at the end of the week and the winner is announced at the football game.  Goodwill will except just about anything, including cars:)   If we win for the week, Interact gets $300.  If we collect more than any other school all football season, we receive another $700.   The money raised throughout the year in Interact is given to students for scholarships.  Last year, we lost to Brookville:(  Actually, Brookville beat everyone last year and collected the added bonus of $700.  I would love to see us beat them this year.

So, clean out those drawers, closets, and basements.  The more, the heavier, the better!!!!

Valley View Community Drug Free Coalition event, Tuesday, September 20, 6pm to 9pm

Free!!!!

Please remember that the next Valley View Community Drug-Free Coalition meeting is this Tuesday from 6-9.  This is an excellent program presented by three men from the Franklin County Sherrif's Department.  All the grants offered to provide this program to schools/communitiies are already booked through 2017 so the VVCDFC is paying $2,250 because we feel the benefits of this program are so important.  CTC offered the program to their staff last year and my friends who teach there said it was the best inservice they had ever attended.  It is targeted to school staff, coaches, and parents.  No one wants to spend time away from their family in the evening, but I assure you that this will be time well spent.  Thank you in advance for your support.
